Fiete Choice – find the odd one out

Fiete Choice

Fiete Choice is a logic game that trains one of the most important thinking skills: finding the odd one out. Children look at a set of objects and identify which one doesn't belong. Sounds simple – but the game cleverly builds from obvious differences to subtle ones, challenging children to think deeper with every round.

One of these things is not like the others.

Perché abbiamo creato questo gioco

The ability to categorise – to see what things have in common and what makes one different – is at the heart of logical thinking. Scientists classify, mathematicians group, readers distinguish. We wanted to give children a playful way to practice this fundamental skill. Fiete Choice was designed to make categorisation feel like a game rather than a test, with charming illustrations that make children want to look more closely.

Regole del gioco

Children see a row of objects – usually three or four. One of them is different. They tap on the one that doesn't fit. 99 levels lead through categories like animals, marine life, fruit, cars, geometric shapes and nautical flags. Early rounds use obvious differences (a blue ball among red balls), while later rounds require more careful thinking (a closed umbrella among open ones, or a sailing boat among motor boats). Two game modes are available: a relaxed mode for thinking at your own pace, and an optional time-trial mode for older children who like a little extra challenge. Each correct answer is met with a delightful animation.

Sometimes the difference is obvious – sometimes it takes a second look.

Cosa lo rende speciale

What makes Fiete Choice special is the elegance of its design. There is exactly one mechanic – find the odd one out – but the variations are endless. The game progresses from colour differences to shape differences to functional differences to conceptual differences, naturally guiding children up the ladder of abstract thinking. And because each round takes just a few seconds, the game fits perfectly into short moments throughout the day. Awarded the Red Dot Best of the Best 2015, Parents' Choice Gold 2015 and the Editor's Choice Award 2015.

Logical classification

Identifying what doesn't belong requires understanding the category that unites the other objects. Children learn to think in groups and rules – the foundation of logical reasoning that underlies mathematics, science and language.

Attention to detail

As the differences become subtler, children must look more carefully. This training in careful observation sharpens visual discrimination – the same skill that helps distinguish 'b' from 'd' or '6' from '9' when learning to read and write.

Abstract thinking

In the later rounds, the difference isn't visual but conceptual: a tool among toys, a winter item among summer items. Children begin to think beyond what things look like and towards what things mean – the beginning of abstract thought.
