Why the KidsKlub is needed

You know that uneasy feeling you get when you give your child a tablet: Is it too soon? Too loud? Is it addictive?

Anyone who looks at digital games on a phone or tablet today knows the drill: the apps are colorful and loud, and there’s always some button trying to lure a child’s attention in a certain direction. In the worst cases, ads interrupt the game or pop-ups entice users with in-app purchases. That’s because many of these “free” apps are primarily optimized for clicks and revenue.

Children deserve better. A place where they can explore, be amazed, and make mistakes—without anyone tempting them to click the "Buy" button. 

The OECD Learning Compass 2030 identifies skills such as creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration as key competencies for the future. Playful, interactive media can help children develop these skills.

Like good toys on the living room floor

We develop our apps as a deliberate alternative. Inspired by Montessori pedagogy, our digital toys are open, calm, and inviting. Children can explore at their own pace, without any constant pressure or artificial reward systems.

Playing is different from watching TV

When discussing screen time, it’s important to remember that there is a crucial difference between playing and simply watching: Watching videos is a more passive activity. New images flash by every second, situations change suddenly due to rapid cuts, and more information bombards the child than their young brain can process. This leads to sensory overload.  Playing is more active. In play, a child experiences a sense of competence. It requires decision-making; you initiate actions and observe the game’s reactions. The child can control the speed—and thus the amount of information the brain must process—within the game itself.

Creativity is just as important as reading and writing. We should treat it with the same seriousness.

When a child builds a racetrack in Fiete Cars, they have to plan. When they load ships in Fiete Math, they have to weigh their options. That’s cognitive effort, but it’s fun. 

Learning happens naturally when children are truly engaged in play. That’s why we develop content that challenges and supports children. After all, it’s not really about whether a child uses a digital device or how much time they spend in front of a screen, but rather what they do during that time.

So much so that we evaluate every app allowed into the KidsKlub based on this one question: Does it help children truly play—or does it just distract them?
